Have you seen the news from Wisconsin and Ohio where plans to cut state budgets are targeting state employees and their labor union won rights and benefits ? What do you think ? When states don't have enough revenue to continue operating all their programs, where should they cut ? What about counties ? cities ? school districts ?
Topic 6: Small Business and the American Economy NOW CLOSED-(Open Mon, 28 Feb through Sun, 6 Mar). Last week, president Obama visited Cleveland to speak to business leaders- especially about promoting the growth of small businesses. Small businesses are seen as the key to creating good paying private sector jobs that will enable workers to make a decent living. What small businesses are you familiar with ? What sort of job do you hope to have when you start making a living ? What can government at the local, state, and national level do to help small businesses get started, grow, and hire more employees ? This topic is also meant to relate to the Career Activities that you'll soon have rescheduled with the guidance counselors.
Topic 7: Gas Prices and Alternative Energy NOW CLOSED-(Open Monday, March 7th through Sunday, March 13th.) Prices are going up again as a result of expected declining supply (Due to unrest in the Middle East) along with rising demand globally. How much will your family be willing to pay per gallon before changing their driving habits? What should the government do? Could this be good news for alternative energy sources?
__**Topic 8: The Tsunami and Japan- Consequences**__ NOW CLOSED(Open Monday, March 14th and extended through Friday, March 25th.) What lessons are there in the aftermath of the greatest disaster to hit Japan since the end of World War II ? What can and should we do to help Japan recover and take care of its citizens short term and long term?
Topic 9: Intervention in Libya NOW CLOSED (Open Monday, March 21st through Friday, March 25th). U.S. forces have conducted missile attacks against Libyan air defenses in partnership with France and Britain in this intervention. Our purpose is to protect the Libyan people from their dictator leader. What do you think ?
